What's VisualRaster?

VisualRaster will develop a new set of web-based tools that makes use of the latest web-browser technologies to change the way we work with geospatial data. The main objective is to apply new web technologies, like WebGL, to perform analysis and visualizations of complex environmental and biodiversity data. It will enable data producers to analyze and build their own interactive maps. From data to information, from information to insight and from insight to action.

Working together with scientist, our future tools will enable use cases like: How will climate change affect crops in Spain? Where should we establish new protected areas to protect Biodiversity? What is the Carbon Sequestration of Forests?

Research areas

We will be focusing in the following research areas:

  • Data access and process of geospatial data in distributed servers
  • Raster-like geospatial data visualization on the web
  • Sophisticated algorithms for the process and aggregation of geospatial data and environmental variables
  • Multitouch surfaces for data visualization. Interfaces and user experience
  • Cloud computing and scalability for the process and high-capacity service of geospatial data

About the partnership

Vizzuality is a leading company on the field of data visualization for Biodiversity and Conservation. Over the last years Vizzuality has been working with the biggest organizations on Biodiversity and Conservation to help them analyze and visualize their data. Most of this data is geospatial and during the last years multiple technologies components have been developed.

IE University is an international university based in Spain. The School of Biology of IE University focueses on research and education in biological and environmental sciences.
